Dalit persecution continues unabated

The last 60 years of post-independence period have seen many ups and downs in India. It is also true that in the same period, especially in the last one and half decade, India has progressed a lot. The most spontaneous and exponential developments have been in the fields of IT and industry. But it must be said that these developments have widened the polarization in the society and has led to the emergence of two nations in a single country, India and Bharat.

Of these two while the first one is candidly urban and with lofty aspirations, the later one is strictly rural dealing with the quondam issues which do raise their heads from time to time. One of this is the insidious saga of castesim. It is true that from time immemorial India has been in the grip of castesim and its virulent features. Though there have been enough social movements in the Hindu society to discard this malice no such fruitful result has occurred. What is more it is still prevalent in the rural parts of India and goes unabated due to the indulgence of the local administration.

This scenario was again proved in the recent days when in the state of Rajasthan, in a village in Ajmer, a teenage Dalit girl along with her mother were beaten mercilessly and stripped publicly. The perpetrators were members of the upper caste without any doubt.

What was the fault of the hapless family? The mother stood firm against the two Jat men, who had intentions to make her daughter subject of their carnal desires. This stiff resistance infuriated them and the angry men humiliated the Dalit women in full public view of the village.

The terrified family has taken shelter in the office of the Deputy Superintendent of police in Ajmer's Kekri town and is in no way ready to return. They fear of losing their lives.

In the meanwhile, though the two Jat men, named Bannalal Dhakad and Jasraj Dhakad have fled but the villagers have refused to offer any help and are staying tightlipped.

Though the police have already registered a case under the Prevention of Atrocities against SC/ST Act but is in every way helpless before this malevolence of centuries.

To the latest news, the condition of the wretched family is as before.

Can we talk of democracy or socialism any more?
